UNC’s School of Theatre Arts and Dance will perform two plays based off of Anton Chekhov’s play “The Three Sisters” opening tonight in Norton Theatre. The two plays being performed are “The Three Sisters,” a dramatic comedy, as well as “Anton in Show Business,” a story about Chekov himself. “Anton in Show Business” begins Feb. 17.
“The Three Sisters” is a comedic drama that focuses on the lives of three sisters who are fatherless and living in Russia during a time of privileged decay. The story is spun around the three sisters’ search for “meaning” in the modern world and hopes of returning to Moscow, their homeland. It is a story of hope and triumph mixed with comedic relief that the actors and producers hope will become a favorite part.
“The Three Sisters” will be performed at 7:30 tonight until Saturday and will show again at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 23, 25 and 27 and at 2 p.m. Feb. 28.
“Anton in Show Business” is a comedy by Jane Martin based on the work of Anton Chekov. The comedy is an intriguing backstage look at an all-female cast at a theater. The production is a rather different version of “The Three Sisters” and is set in San Antonio. The all-female cast comes together to play the multiple roles of a self-centered actress, a New Yorker, country western singer and a gay costume designer. The comedy is a mere satire of Chekov’s work and praises the modern theater. “Anton in Show Business” contains language that may not be suitable for general audiences, so participation in audience attendance is cautioned.
