As sure as the leaves are to turn a golden brown, a new season in basketball always seems to bring about change.

The University of Northern Colorado women's team is no exception.

After the new season schedule's release last week and the start of the season a little more than a month away, the women's basketball team is hoping that a new attitude and a revamped offense will help propel the team to the Big Sky Tournament. Coach Jaime White said the new additions to the team during the off-season will make reaching that goal all the more possible.

"We have a lot of new faces, a lot of young kids," White said. "We're taller. I think we're a little bit more athletic than last year, so I look to improve."

In doing this, the Bears will feature a lineup flush with youth, led by senior Danielle Hagan and junior guard Whitley Cox. According to White, almost no one on this year's squad played extensively for the Bears last year. Cox, however, isn't worried.

"We have a lot of great girls this year that know how to work hard, know how to shoot the ball and play great defense and we communicate a lot," Cox said.

Communication will be key for an offense trying to be more explosive than last year's team, which was outscored by an average of 16 points per game. The addition of more pure shooters during the off-season, according to Cox, will add a dimension which the team was lacking.

"We have a lot of girls that can shoot the ball and understand the offense and understand the motion… and that's what we needed on our team last year," Cox said. "And they're not afraid to shoot the ball at all, so that's nice for everyone."

The Bears will have to figure things out quickly as they face some familiar competition early in the season. Colorado State, Colorado, Air Force and Wyoming all appear on the schedule before conference play begins. For Cox, the game against Colorado State holds a little extra motivation.
