The University of Northern Colorado sports teams were on the road this weekend, but didn't have much success.
The UNC football team fell to Cal Poly 56-21 on Saturday in San Luis Obispo, Calif., while the Bears volleyball team lost two Big Sky Conference matches, 3-2 against Eastern Washington on Thursday and 3-0 against Portland State on Saturday.
The UNC women's soccer team extended its win streak to four games with a 2-1 win against UC Irvine on Friday, however, the Bears' streak ended Sunday when North Dakota State beat UNC 2-0.
During the football game against the Mustangs, junior running back David Woods rushed for a career high 130 yards on 25 carries. He also returned two kickoffs for 43 yards totaling 173 yards, the highest total since Scott Downing became coach at UNC. Woods even threw a 35-yard pass to wide receiver Andy Birkel, which set up the Bears for their first touchdown.
Quarterback Mike Vlahogeorge completed 13 passes on 21 attempts, totaling 118 yards.
The UNC volleyball team lost against Eastern Washington in a five game struggle (23-30, 23-30, 21-30, 30-27, 10-15). Sophomore outside hitter Kenzie Shreeve led the team in kills with 12. Outside hitter Allison Raguse led with 12 blocks and libero Abby Mayne tallied 21 digs.
Portland State blew out the Bears in three games (30-26, 30-22, 30-20.) Outside hitter Taylor Smith led the offensive play with 10 kills, while defensive specialist Breanna VanDerMost led in defensive play with nine digs.
The two Big Sky losses make the UNC volleyball team 2-3 in the conference, 4-12 overall.
The UNC soccer team's win against UC Irvine can be credited to freshman mid-fielder Olivia Deadmond, who scored the game-winning comeback goal on the Anteaters. The Bears were behind by one goal in about the first minute of the game, but thanks to goals by Teresa Prais and Deadmond, the soccer team pulled out the win.
At the Air Force Academy, the four-game win streak ended for UNC when North Dakota State shut out the Bears. Both goals against UNC were scored in the first half. The loss against the Bisons makes the Bears 3-5-1. The UNC women's soccer team is yet to play a Big Sky game.
