Students gathered in large numbers on Thursday evening to rally against violence during the eighth annual Take Back the Night rally.
Those who attended should be commended for supporting a worthy cause, and hopefully they all learned something and were touched by the testimonies of the assault victims.
Those who organized the rally did a good job of not only including female victims to speak to the crowd, but also including males who have been victims of sexual assault. There aren't many males that are willing to talk about their experiences with sexual assault, so the organizers deserve an extra pat on the back for incorporating this aspect into the rally.
Take Back the Night is traditionally a rally against sexual assault, however, UNC advertised its rally as one against violence in general. Sexual assault is without a doubt a devastating and life-changing kind of violence, but other types should not be ignored. With an entire week devoted to the cause to end sexual assault, there is plenty of time to organize events to help educate students about other types of violence.
Given the propensity for violence to be proceeded by alcohol consumption, college students may need to be educated on the subject more than most. Violence is certainly a problem on all college campuses and it would make perfect sense to address the issue during a week already dedicated to ending assault.
Let's make an already great event even better by helping all victims of assault and violence.
