Palettes of blue and gold, shimmering disco balls and outstretched '70s figures danced along the balcony of the University Center's west patio on Monday as homecoming kicked off with the banner contest.

The competition was between different residence halls and Greek life organizations on the University of Northern Colorado campus. The top three banners were put on display in downtown Greeley on Tuesday and will remain there throughout the week. The University Program Council, the group responsible for hosting the contest, is directing efforts toward promoting interaction between the community and UNC.

"We are trying to get downtown involved with campus," said Kindal Konechne, the UPC traditional event coordinator.

The banners will be on display throughout the week at Island Grill, 801 9th St., Salvador Deli, 800 9th St., and Rio Grande, 825 9th St., but the winners will not be announced until Saturday.

The organizations with the winning banner will be awarded spirit points, which will count toward the week's total and put them in the race for the trophy given out at the end of homecoming.

Entries were judged on creativity, originality and the overall appeal of the banner, which could not be any bigger than a twin sheet. They had to be done in good taste and incorporate this year's homecoming theme - 'SOLID Blue & Gold.'

In past years, about 20 banners have been entered into the contest, and this year Heather Bermingham, the UPC Coordinator, was satisfied with the number of entries and impressed with the creativity that went into them.

"I think we have a lot of representation this year from Greek Life and the residence halls," said Bermingham.

Banners were evaluated by members of Student Activities on Monday afternoon, and Graduate Assistant Jordan Callier was very supportive of this year's homecoming theme and thought all the entries were top notch.

"I think it is a really good theme because the '70s are back, and our generation really likes a retro theme," said Callier. "People were really creative in all these entries."

Although a few of the judges could point out preliminary favorites, they admitted it would be a hard decision to narrow it down to the top three best banners that support the spirit of 'SOLID Blue & Gold.'
