It's time for the snowboard and ski season to start up and resorts to open, and the Northern Colorado Riders are more ready than ever for snow to start falling.
In its second year, NCR is hopeful about the 2007 season. The official ski and snowboard club at the university was developed just last year by two freshmen raised in the Midwest who came out to Colorado to indulge in their love of these extreme sports.
The ski and snowboard scene at UNC was small, and after some inspiration from Boulder Freeride, NCR was born. Besides having a group of friends that share an interest in skiing and boarding, the club allows students to meet new people and win prizes, such as free boards, goggles and passes, through event raffles.
Eva Berthold, NCR's marketing and events director, advises anyone with an interest in snowboarding or skiing to get involved.
"When I was a freshman, I didn't really know the scene and NCR helped me meet people I can ride with," Berthold said.
Members also receive discounts at specialized stores, such as Alpine Haus, 4855 W 10th St., and Garretson's, 3817 W 10th St. They welcome any level of skier or boarder, even novice riders, and will help them improve. This year NCR hopes to reach 200 members.
"I'm excited about this year," said Tyler Goodman, vice president of NCR. "We all hope to get new members and to get existing members excited to be part of NCR. Condo nights will be a blast."
Condo nights are available to all members and $20 will cover a full weekend in the mountains for boarding and skiing. NCR also hosted the "Burton World Tours: Thanks in Advance Movie Premiere" Wednesday night in the Lindou Theatre; welcoming club members, as well as the general public, for a free movie premiere and giveaways, including a new Burton snowboard.
The club's next event is Thursday, for a general meeting as well as the "Picture This" and "We're People Too" movie premiere at 8 p.m. in Ross 1040.
Avid snowboarders are looking forward to checking out NCR.
Junior communication major Joe Pederson is impressed that NCR is available to Northern Colorado students.
"I love going boarding and I think it's great to see a student-run organization make it more accessible for other students to go up and enjoy the sport," Pederson said.
Next Tuesday and Wednesday there will be a sign-up table to join the club in the University Center and future members can join online at www.northerncoloradoriders.com.
