Students of the University of Northern Colorado will have the chance to make a difference and make a change in someone's life on Make A Difference Day.

Some of the projects that students can participate in at this Saturday's event are painting pumpkins with people at hospice, decorating for Christmas with non-profit organizations, raking leaves around the Greeley area and gardening with some of the elder people who need help getting ready for the winter.

"It gives the UNC student a chance to get out into the Greeley community and learn a little bit more about what's out there, not just what's here on campus," said Agner Martinez, the volunteer manager at the United Way in Weld County.

Registration for Make A Difference Day is an easy online process. Simply go to the UNC home page at unco.edu, click on the campus life link and click on the student services link, which will bring up the community connections page. Once there, students can create a user account for themselves, or even for groups that are interested in Make A Difference Day causes and activities. Once an account has been created, students can choose the project they would most like to participate in.

With this online volunteer account, students or groups can sign up for projects in the future, as well as for Make A Difference Day. The account is easy to use and works with busy student schedules. It also keeps track of the projects completed, how many hours completed and where students volunteer.

"It's really good for long term projects and encouraging people to continue to give back to the community," said Erin Christiansen, a senior business management entrepreneurship and economics major, who is working as the community connections coordinator.

United Way, 814 8th St., co-hosted with UNC Community Connections, is putting on Make a Difference Day.

The event will take place in the Lindou Auditorium for breakfast and briefing at 9 a.m. At 10 a.m., attendees will branch off and begin volunteering at their chosen site. Make a Difference Day will end at approximately 2 p.m.

"I've gone in the past, and it's just been a really great experience, feeling like I'm helping out the Greeley community," said Erik Buol, a sophomore English education major, who is planning to work with friends to help the Weld Food Bank.
