This time the Colorado Rockies didn't just win another playoff game, they swept the Arizona Diamondbacks to win the National League Championship Series and advance to the World Series.
Colorado topped the D-Backs 6-4 on Monday to earn their 21st win in 22 games.
Thanks to a double by pinch hitter Seth Smith, a single by Kazuo Matsui and finally a home run by Matt Holiday, the Rockies were up against Arizona 6-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning. The D-Backs wouldn't give up, and in the eighth inning Arizona came within two runs on a home run from Chris Snyder. The Diamondbacks were unable to finish the Rockies, and fittingly, like many times before, Colorado shortstop Troy Tulowitzki fielded a ground ball and threw to first baseman Todd Helton to record the final out on Arizona's Eric Byrnes for the win.
Rockies fans at the University of Northern Colorado were stunned.
"I think it's amazing," said John Hatridge, a freshman physical education major.
Junior sports and exercise major Jimmy Raquette said he was elated that the Rockies have earned a spot in the World Series.
"I'm stoked," Raquette said. "It's about time the Rockies put us on the map in history."
Even students who don't follow the Rockies or baseball were excited about the victory and it's consequences. Freshman pre-nursing major Mary Shephard, who admitted she didn't know much about baseball, said the Rockies triumph was pretty awesome. She also said she would try to watch Colorado's next game.
"I don't know when the next game is, but I probably will (watch)," Shephard said.
Criminal justice major and senior Eric Loader also admitted he didn't follow the Rockies much, due to the fact he is originally from Detroit. However, he said he roots for the Rockies when they play.
