UC lacks entertainment for students

As a Resident Assistant, it is almost impossible to overlook the fact that abundant amounts of incoming freshmen view the University of Northern Colorado as a "suitcase" or commuter college. I always ask my residents: "Why do you continue to go back home every weekend?" And I commonly get the same response: "There is nothing to do here."

Is that true? Does UNC not offer anything to do on the weekends? I do not think so. Before you say that there is nothing to do at UNC on the weekends, or weekdays for that matter, take a look at what is actually going on.

This weekend alone, Make a Difference Day will provide countless opportunities for students at UNC to get out into the Greeley community and lend a hand with special projects. Next weekend the UNC men's basketball team will play host to Johnson and Wales University on Saturday night, which makes for a great opportunity to get together with friends around campus and cheer on our UNC Bears.

One area where I do believe UNC is lacking in an opportunity to provide more entertainment opportunities is the University Center. At Ohio State University, the University Center is home to a Buckeye Comedy Club where students can watch stand-up comedy skits performed by fellow students or up-and-coming talent. At the University of Arizona, their student center has a unique space called Wilbur's Underground that has 16 billiard tables, table tennis, tons of video games played on big screen televisions and a poker room with eight tables. At both universities, there has been a great focus on keeping students on campus in an exciting environment and both universities have been able to do it at a reasonably low cost.

The University Center could be a place for students to find a reason to say. There is a lot to do here UNC. Students could go to the University Center to do more than print off a paper or go to Starbucks if the university had a stronger focus on entertainment-based spaces such as a Comedy Club or Game Room.

Before you say there is nothing to do here on the weekends, go check out the UNC calendar, but do not be afraid to ask for a little more out of the University Center to give you more reasons to stick around on Friday nights.
