Mindy Rawlings, administrative assistant to the Office of Academic Support and Advising, said the fair, dubbed "Tools for Major Success," was expected to draw around 800 participants and was not only a way for students to learn more about the different colleges and departments at UNC, but an occasion for these groups to showcase their opportunities.
"It's a chance for all the departments on campus, as well as the clubs and organizations concerning those departments, to present themselves to students," Rawlings said.
For two hours, scholars could wander throughout the ballrooms speaking with faculty and fellow students about the varying career fields and collecting four-year plans for the accompanying majors.
Joanna Williams, an undeclared freshman, attended the major fair and spoke with Coordinator of Music Advising Bob Ehle about becoming a music major.
Many more freshmen turned out for the event, but most, unlike Williams who attended of her own accord, were directed to the fair by the teachers of their First Year Experience classes.
"I had to come for FYE, but I am actually getting some help," said undeclared freshman Anastasia Pelegrin after talking with a representative from the Monfort College of Business.
Career Services was among the many academic services and scholastic departments that hosted a table at the event. Sarah Trzeciak, assistant director of the program, was happy to see a full line of students at their table and stressed that this was what college was all about.
"The most important part of education is figuring out what you want to do," Trzeciak said. "This is a service that we provide. We help students figure out what their interests are and what majors fit those interests."
Overall, the Office of Academic Support and Advising was pleased with the number of students taking advantage of the opportunity to develop their future career path.
Robbie Clarke, a peer advisor for the office, was very proud of the major fair.
"This year's turnout was really good," Clarke said. "I am impressed."
