While defeating Montana State is not as significant as defeating the University of Southern California like Stanford did, the University of Northern Colorado football team will take it.
The Bears ended a school record 15-game losing streak with a 16-13 win against the No. 19 Montana State Bobcats on Saturday at Nottingham Field.
"It all came together today," defensive lineman Joe Silipo said.
Bears coach Scott Downing said the win was about doing the little things right.
"We made a lot of good plays, but we also made a lot of routine plays," Downing said.
The hero for the Bears was freshman kicker Zak Bigelow, who made all three of his field goal attempts, including the game-winning, 37-yard kick with four seconds left.
"I've always dreamed of hitting a game-winning kick," Bigelow said.
Bigelow also gave the Bears their first lead and first home points of the season when he broke a scoreless tie with a 25-yard field goal just over a minute into the second quarter. It didn't take the Bobcats long to answer the Bears' score though. They answered back with with a 72-yard touchdown drive that gave them a 6-3 halftime lead after a missed extra point.
After a touchdown from Dominic Breazeale to Clint Wright and Bigelow's second field goal, the Bears looked to be in control with a 13-6 lead. But the Bobcats blocked a Rafael Mendoza punt and got a nine-yard touchdown pass from Jack Rolovich to Demetrius Crawford to tie the game at 13 with 48 seconds left.
Cory Fauver then ran the ensuing kickoff back for 51 yards to the Bobcats' 46-yard-line. Breazeale then hit tightend Ryan Chesla with a 26-yard pass to set up Bigelow's kick and the Bears win.
