University of Northern Colorado students look forward to winter break as a time to relax without having to worry about school.
However, students wanting to move ahead in their academic endeavors, or for those needing to catch up, the university offers an interim session of mainly online classes for students to take control of their academic careers.
The interim session begins on Dec. 17 and lasts until Jan. 11. Some regular services of the university, like the libraries and academic advising, will be open during the session, while the dining halls and tutoring services will be closed.
With the special status of the interim session, many questions also arise about cost, payment and financial aid availability for classes.
According to the FAQ on the UNC Web site, the only aid available for interim session will be a student loan if you have not already received your maximum for the 2007-2008 academic year. Dependent students can also apply for additional funds from their Parent Loan for Undergraduate Students (PLUS) loan.
Bills will be sent out in paper form on Dec. 6, and payment is due on Dec. 21. Students with registration holds must clear them before they can register for classes during the interim session.
Even though the session has more restrictions and fine print than registration for the spring, summer and fall, students see the opportunity in a positive light.
"I might as well get some credits out of the way," said Andrew Kippur, a sophomore theatre education major. "With a change of major, I might be here longer. I don't want to worry about them."
The wide range of classes available allows a much more diverse group of majors to take advantage of the interim session. It also creates time during the spring and fall semesters for other activities than classes.
"There's more time for a job and to study during the semester," said Holly Grodsky, a sophomore math major. "Some classes, it would be better to take online."
Registration for the interim session is done through URSA. Available classes, times and locations are also done through URSA. Additional information on the interim session can be found on UNC's Web site at http://www.unco.edu/interim/index.asp. The interim session FAQ can be found at http://www.unco.edu/interim/faq.html.
