Wrestling team loses to ranked Nebraska, wins next three

The University of Northern Colorado wrestling team grappled a 3-1 record during winter break with impressive wins over big name programs.
The Bears started off on Jan. 2 hosting No. 11 ranked Nebraska, who dominated the match by beating UNC 38-6. The Bears scored their only six points due to a Nebraska forfeit at 133-pounds. The loss would be UNC's only loss during break.
The Bears' Western Wrestling Conference home opener on Jan. 5 against South Dakota State turned into UNC's first dual victory of the season as they won 29-10.
The highlight of the match was when UNC senior heavyweight Reece Hopkin, ranked 19th in the nation, earned the only pin in just under a minuteagainst SDSU's Brady Punt.
Next, the Bears traveled into the Pacific Northwest to face two Pac-10 wrestling teams, Portland State and Oregon.
Wednesday, Portland State was no problem for UNC, as the Bears controlled the match for a 41-6 win. UNC won six of eight bouts along with two forfeits by Portland State at 125 pounds and 133 pounds.
The Bears squeaked by with an 18-16 win against Oregon, improving their record to 3-4 on the season. The Bears also participated in the Oregon Classic on Saturday and will continue their season as they face WWC foe Northern Iowa on Saturday.
