On Monday students at the University of Northern Colorado will be given the opportunity to have the day off from classes to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
As a student of UNC, you may be one that decides to head back home for a three-day weekend or head to the slopes to catch the fresh powder. However, instead of sitting around at home watching television or freezing on top of a mountain, I would like to take this opportunity to challenge you to do something a little different for this three-day weekend.
Have you ever thought of participating in an event that has encompassed hundreds of thousands of individuals throughout its history? Have you ever wanted to celebrate diversity, harmony, knowledge, freedom, love and integrity with other individuals throughout your community? If you have ever dreamed of being a part of something that emphasizes freedom and diversity, there will be a perfect opportunity for you on Monday.
The University of Northern Colorado and the city of Greeley have given you the opportunity to take Monday off from classes in order to help make a difference for your community and for yourself. I will be at the Martin Luther King Jr. commemoration on Monday morning at the Greeley Chamber of Commerce and I want to challenge you to do the same. Come to the march and keynote address to help support and relive the dream that Martin Luther King Jr. shared with the world not so long ago.
I have always believed that most of what you learn in college happens outside of the classroom. The opportunity of experiencing the Martin Luther King Jr. march and keynote address will allow students to learn more about themselves, as well as the community that surrounds them. No matter if this is your first march, or your fifth, take this opportunity on Monday to step outside of the classroom and reach out to help fulfill a dream that has already been realized by so many individuals throughout the world.
Do something different. Help inspire change. Gain knowledge. Come to the Martin Luther King Jr. commemoration on Monday.
