Welcome to the jungle, we've got fun and games. Guitar Hero III to be exact.

The University Program Council hosted the first ever UNC Guitar Hero Tournament, with the help of the Office of Multi-Cultural Affairs and Cyber Planet, 3000 S. 23rd Ave. The tournament had roughly 65 contenders playing either on easy, medium or expert levels.

"I think it's great, it's really nice to see who is the best on campus," said Hayden Arter, a freshman pre-theatre major.

The program was funded by student fees and put on by the Arts and Entertainment office of UPC. Prizes were given to the best in each category and to the best costume for male and female players.

"It was my idea. Why not?" said Ken Tronco, a junior business major and head of the Arts and Entertainment office at UPC. "It's a hot thing right now, right? Might as well draw a crowd by doing something popular."

The contestant's rock'n'rolled all night to songs randomly chosen in single elimination matches. They were using Guitar Hero III on Play Station 2, meaning there was no "Devil Went Down to Georgia." The game was projected on large screens and all three difficulties played at the same time using different screens.

With only three systems playing it was a slow ride for some of the contestants as they waited for their turns, but when their time came they all hit it with their best shot. The best players worked their way through fire and flames to make it into the final rounds.

The grand prize was a copy of Guitar Hero III for PS2 donated by UPC for the Expert bracket. The other gifts included wireless guitars and gift certificates to Cyber Planet.

"It's cool, I believe that it helps those that focus on their school work to get out and see the community more," said Kellen Berthiaume, a freshman business major at UNC. "We need more events like this, the more the merrier you know."
