The University of Northern Colorado women's basketball team won it's Big Sky Conference home opener against Eastern Washington, 71-57.

"This was a big win for us, I mean, and just comparing it to last year and how we've been improving ourselves," sophomore forward Chelsie Luhring said.

Junior guard Jamie Schroeder, who scored 13 points, said the Bears were still able to keep up the momentum from the team's last game against Weber State from 11 days ago on Jan. 5 when UNC beat the Wildcats 70-60.

"We had a really good week in practice, we really worked on everything we needed to get better at… We just really focused on whatever we needed to get better at and I think we did," Schroeder said.

Schroeder has recently been the offensive star for the Bears, posting career highs in scoring in UNC's past three games. However, against Eastern Washington, Schroeder got help from Luhring, who scored 12 points, senior center Danielle Hagen, who scored 15 and freshman forward Kate Kevorken, who scored 18.

"I thought Chelsie (Luhring) did a great job, I mean not only with her shooting, but I think, you know, she got a couple rebounds, she did some free throws. I thought Chelsie did a really good job," UNC coach Jaime White said.

Kevorken admitted to being in a scoring slump, but was glad she was able to pick up offensive abilities against the Eagles. Kevorken was 6-10 from the free throw line and 6-13 from the field. In the first half alone she was 5-6 on free throws and 5-7 from the field.

"I've been in a real slump and I think it hurt my game all around and I think it hurt me emotionally," Kevorken said. "I think tonight when I hit my first one it gave me a lot of confidence to know that I still can do it and gave me enough momentum to get my next few."

Kevorken is the only non-starter in the conference ranked in the Big Sky's top 25 in scoring with 9.9 points per game. She has started only one game this season against Wyoming, but said she prefers not to start games.
