It comes as no surprise that Berkeley, Calf. continuously proves it is indeed the land of fruits and nuts, but the latest action coming out of the city has gone beyond the normal idiocy and moved into the plain revolting.

On Jan. 29, the Berkeley City Council voted to tell the U.S. Marines at the recruiting office in the city they are "not welcome in the city, and if recruiters choose to stay, they do so as uninvited and unwelcome intruders."

Adding insult to injury, the City Council also encouraged leftist group Code Pink to publicly disrupt all activity by the Marines in the city. The Marines, of course, have no intention of leaving.

What right does the Berkeley City Council think it has to tell honorable individuals that serve and protect this nation they are not welcome in the city? Individuals that voluntarily chose to serve their country. Apparently freedom of choice isn't an option for these clowns.

The far left screams in outrage anytime someone calls them anti-American. Yet what else can be concluded after actions such as this? Not content to simply disagree, the city is taking direct action to impede the activities of people serving this country. Berkeley's mayor, Tom Bates, claims the council's actions were not intended to show disrespect for the Marines. But that is exactly what this action has done.

In response to the lunacy at Berkeley, Senator Jim DeMint (R-SC) and others have called for legislation to strip Berkeley of its federal funding and transfer that money, which amounts to more than $2 million, instead to the Marines.

Sen. DeMint added; "if the city can't show respect for the Marines that have fought, bled and died for their freedom, Berkeley should not be receiving special taxpayer-funded handouts."

Not surprisingly, some on the Berkeley council are beginning to realize they may have been wrong, after the outrage began pouring into the city council. As with most leftists, they enjoy exercising their freedom to be morons, but don't like the consequences that go along with such actions.

The Berkeley City Council not only needs to rescind this action against the Marines, but they need to issue a public apology for this insult. It's one thing to be against the war in Iraq. It's quite another to insult those that choose to serve their country and impede the actions of those looking to give people the opportunity to make that choice.
