Two University of Northern Colorado faculty have been awarded a $47,000 grant from the Colorado State Historic Fund to lead two excavations near Walden to preserve remnants from the Paleoindian period nearly 10,000 years ago.
Robert Brunswig, professor of anthropology and director of the School of Social Sciences, and Frederic Sellet, assistant professor of anthropology, will oversee the North Park Cultural Landscapes Project.
Since 2003, UNC researchers have surveyed, mapped and conducted minor excavations on Bureau of Land Management property in Colorado's North Park valley. The new grant will allow researchers to advance their work in the field.
In addition to the excavation, radiocarbon tests will be conducted, a geologist will provide models of what the landscape once looked like and UNC Professor of geography Jim Doerner will provide a study on the area's history of climate change.
