With finals just around the corner, students are gearing up for the final stretch of the semester and taking advantage of campus resources to relieve stress.
Counseling Center Senior Psychologist Nancy Turner said finances and the chaos of the end of semester account for some of the reasons students are coming in.
"Students are very stressed about school and grades," Turner said. "We have had a high number of walk-in emergencies."
Turner said these walk-ins are usually overwhelmed students.
"One of the things that happens is that students have a hard time thinking logically," Turner said. "If you can sit down with a therapist and sort of list what your obligations are and then prioritize, that can help."
The Counseling Center helps students by offering a wide array of services. Psychologists help teach time-management skills, stress-management techniques and tips to help prepare for finals.
Many students are unaware of the Counseling Center and as a result, have never utilized it.
Danielle Click, an undeclared freshman, has never been to the Counseling Center but has used her resident assistant when seeking advice about finals and studying.
"My RA tells me not to put it off to the last minute," Click said. "He really wants us to do well."
Click said she was unsure of what finals would be like during her first semester of college but feels more prepared this semester.
"Last semester, I was really unaware of what I needed to expect," Click said. "I am less stressed this semester than I was last semester."
Residence halls also boast valuable resources for students, including help from experienced RAs and study lounges with wireless Internet access.
Jarrett Rivera, a junior theatre education major and an RA in Harrison Hall, said he has utilized the study lounges in the residence halls and pushes his residents to do the same.
He also said students should not wait to study until the weekend before.
"The most important thing is to get sleep," Rivera said. "If you stay up all night, when 8 a.m. comes around, your final is here, but you can't concentrate at all."
