Encouraging students to take study breaks
Staff Report
Issue date: 4/30/08 Section: Staff Reflections
Finals are approaching faster than some students expected. While the majority of finals are scheduled for next week, some students have finals this week. Either way, students generally experience stress, but there are some ways to lower your stress levels.
Getting to the gym or taking a walk is one way to not only relieve stress, but to be healthy, too. For those who aren't into exercising, students can meditate, play video games or cook. If you have found some extra cash in your pocket or just feel like treating yourself to some new clothes, shopping will also distract your mind from stress.
Step out and take a coffee break with some friends. If you feel overworked and overwhelmed, take a nap. Put on your favorite movie, television show or music. Bust out a few dance moves while you're at it.
Each year, the Campus Recreation Center attracts students to its Spa Night. Because of its popularity, Spa Night has been moved to the University Center. So if none of the previous suggestions are what you desire, give Spa Night a try. With free services and free food, it's hard to pass up such a good offer. The university does a good job of providing services like Spa Night.
Another service that we recommend is the Study Breaks at Tobey-Kendel Dining Hall and Holmes Dining Hall. These study breaks are more than just grabbing a snack and hitting the books again. Unlike staying in your room, you have the freedom to socialize with friends and acquaintances, maybe even get some tips on a final for a class someone else has taken.
Whether you decide to take advantage of the programs offered by the university or stick to other vices, be sure to take a break. Try not to stress out too much because part of being healthy and getting a good grade includes being calm and relaxed.
