Cancer has affected many lives, and what some people who encounter the disease have in common is their fight against the ailment. Residents of Weld County are joining that fight by participating in Weld County's Relay For Life on June 6 at Island Grove Park.
The University of Northern Colorado hosted Relay For Life in March, but this summer Weld County will be the host.
At UNC, Relay For Life brought in 44 different groups to help the cause, raising an estimated $40,000. Greeley's Relay For Life hopes to top those numbers.
"We hope to have 210 teams and raise $450,000," said Jared Fiel, Relay For Life's media chair.
That's more than ten times the amount raised by UNC.
Greeley's Relay For Life starts on June 6, and it is open to anyone interested in participating.
Fiel said the easier way for people to get involved is to register on Relay For Life's Web site, www.weldrelay.org.
This year, the race will take place at Island Grove Park. This is a change from previous years when the event was on rodeo grounds. The event will start with the opening luminary ceremony at 6 p.m. Candles will be lit in memory of those who have died from cancer.
"It's moving to see," Fiel said.
The event will continue through 10 a.m. the following day. Fiel said the event in Weld County will be exciting.
"Weld County's relay is the largest in a 12 state region" Fiel said. "It's really taken off in recent years. I remember when we started, we only had 13 teams participating."
Students who participated in UNC's Relay For Life said they enjoyed the event when they participated in it.
"It's all for a good cause," said Britney Writer, a junior biology major. "I ran at the UNC relay. It doesn't matter which one you go to, the money goes to the same place."
