Cans to Candelaria is a yearly food donation drive that connects UNC students, staff and faculty to the Weld County Food Bank. Clubs, student groups and organizations, residence halls and campus buildings all had a part in raising food and funds for the event.

This year, UNC proved once again that the community could come together and raise awareness and resources for the less fortunate. The overall total raised by the campus was more than 23,000 pounds of food — this translates into more than 21,000 meals for the hungry.

“The event advertised to students about the importance of getting involved with the community,” said Dani Weiss, president of the sociology club and a senior psychology and sociology major. “While I think it is important to have a student so focused on school, it is important to get involved.”

The event was advertised through various mediums: flyers, professors’ announcements in class, bake sales, word of mouth, Facebook and even Twitter.

“We’re pretty high-tech thanks to our awesome administrative assistant, Lisa Finley, in the sociology office,” said Diane Schott, a sociology lecturer.

The main goal was to spread awareness of need in Weld County, especially in the food sector, as well as involve the entire UNC campus in supporting the community.

“I was offered extra credit for a class for donating to this cause,” said Shelby Foster, a sophomore journalism major. “I think it is a cool way to engage students and encourage people to donate.”
The food and money that is raised at the event is given to the Weld County Food Bank, which serves upward of 10,000 people each month.

The food bank was established in 1982 and has a 35,000 square foot warehouse equipped with a state-of-the-art kitchen, dry good storage and large freezers and coolers for all collected food.

The Weld County Food Bank is located at 1108 H Street. If students didn’t get a chance to contribute to the Cans to Candelaria food drive, the food bank is always accepting donations.
