VanDriel was in the backseat of his parents' car along with Stephanie South, a UNC alumna and last year's Administrative Assistant for the Senate, while his father, Bryan, was driving.
His mother, Marcia was in the front passenger seat.
It is uncertain exactly when VanDriel regained consciousness, but at 10:52 a.m. Wednesday South posted on VanDriel's Facebook page, "…Matt is getting out of ICU (intensive care unit) today. He is doing well."
