On Wednesday, The Center for Peer Education hosted BINGO Night in the University Center Ballrooms. BINGO Night takes place four to fives times a semester, and each game has a different theme.
“Because Wednesday night has been identified as a night on which students engage in high-risk alcohol behavior, CPE implemented BINGO Night,” said Emily Hedstrom-Lieser, the coordinator of the Drug, Alcohol and Tobacco Education office.
Besides BINGO Night, Hedstrom-Lieser said CPE hosts several events during Alcohol Awareness Week and Tobacco Awareness Week every fall, as well as facilitating events during Safe Spring Break Week in the spring.
“Because we encourage responsible decision-making, our goal is for students to be better equipped to make safe and healthy decisions,” Hedstrom-Lieser said.
Hedstrom-Lieser also said CPE provides prevention education to UNC students, staff and faculty regarding alcohol, drugs, tobacco and making overall healthy decisions. CPE consists of three student staff members who are nationally-certified Peer Educators, as well as volunteers dedicated to educating other students about issues specific to the college population.
Courtney Day, a junior elementary education major and a CPE staff member, said she works to inform the school about tobacco usage, organizes Tobacco Awareness Week and helps designate smoking areas across campus.
“As an alternate activity, students come here to play bingo and to learn about health awareness,” Day said. “It is a good way for students to get information on health and wellness issues.”
Day also said students don’t have to succumb to social norms and gave the example of students having a designated driver when they go out drinking.
