Guest artist inspires others to appreciate quality of life

In your March 3 issue, I read about a Denver artist, Delton Demarest, who expresses himself through his various works of oils and aerosol.

I believe Delton's art comes alive once you step into Mariani Gallery in Guggenheim Hall. I recently viewed his collection and found myself asking several questions: Where do I start? What does this mean? How should I react to this? That is what is so beautiful about art, those questions do not matter.

"My inspiration comes from my surroundings," Demarest said. "My statements aren't necessarily yelled with a microphone, but they're apparent if you look closely." I believe he is an inspiration to many to create art that is not just nice to look at, but challenges us to make a statement.

I also believe it's artists like Delton Demarest who can open the eyes of an entire university to make us react and respect the quality of life, no matter the viewpoint.

Delton says of his vision, "For me, painting is gratifying in many ways, but two key parts of creating art push me to continue on; the first is the process, and the second is the reaction of the viewer."

There is not one explanation for each piece, but there is a certain feeling for how you react to it. We all know there are reactions to sporting events, reactions to tests and class lectures, but what about the reaction to art? All of these reactions are a part of our lives that enhance the quality in which we live our lives.

Delton Demarest creates art that makes statements and challenges the viewer. It is that quality of Delton that is to always be admired and never ridiculed.

Delton Demarest's artwork is on display in Mariani Gallery in Guggenheim Hall until April 1. I recommend everyone go check it out and see how you react to it. I bet your jaw drops.
