Softball wins opener

The UNC softball team opened its season on a high note Thursday, defeating Southern University 13-4 in Baton Rouge, La.

The University of Northern Colorado got four hits apiece from senior outfielder Erin Geddis and junior outfielder Lindsey Smith and received a strong pitching effort from freshmen Kelci Cheney and Mikayla Duffy, sophomore Megan Wilkinson and junior Jamie Pollak.

The Bears scored first, plating three runs in the top of the first inning and added on with three more in the third. The Jaguars cut into the lead with four runs in the bottom half of the third inning but wouldn't get another hit the rest of the game.

In all, the Bears tallied 17 hits to Southern's five.

Geddis, Smith and Duffy had one RBI while Pollak, freshmen designated hitter Tianalia Fa'asua and shortstop Kaitlin Flynn and senior catcher Erin Wilkinson, Megan's sister, each had two RBIs.

The Bears move on to the Lion Classic in Hammond, La., today with an 11:30 a.m. game against Akron and a 4:30 p.m. game against Jackson State. UNC also faces the University of Tennessee-Martinsville and Southeastern Louisiana at 9 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. Saturday, respectively, and concludes the tournament against Kansas at 8 a.m. Sunday.
