As the UNC spring concert approaches, students await the highly anticipated appearance of up and coming hip-hop duo Macklemore & Ryan Lewis.

The 4,000 tickets that were originally released for purchase sold out within 84 hours, and the first 200, which were free for UNC students, were gone within eight minutes. Fortunately for those who were unable to buy tickets that quickly, an additional 900 tickets were released for sale due to the high demand.

"I'm excited for the concert because it's a well-known artist and I'm surprised he came to UNC in the first place," said Jake Macauley, a communications major from Aims Community College.

Macauley owns one of Macklemore's albums.

"I expect him (Macklemore) to put on a good show," said Macauley.

The indie rap group from Seattle are the first independent artists in over 20 years to top the Billboard charts without the use of a high profile label to support them. Macklemore, or Ben Haggerty as he is known off stage, has been releasing music since the early 2000s, but just recently gained recognition for the success of his debut album, The Heist. His hit single "Thrift Shop," topped the Billboard Hot 100 for four straight weeks before dropping down to the number two spot this past week.

"A rapper coming from Seattle; you don't see that very often," said Mark Norris, a senior geology major at UNC.

Norris said that he listened to Macklemore & Ryan Lewis' entire album on iTunes when it was released in early October.

"Some I can listen to any day of the week," said Norris.

Macklemore was recently questioned in an interview on MTV News about the surprise success of his single "Thrift Shop."

Macklemore said, "I thought it was going to be like a niche demographic that some of our fan base would like. I never thought that it would be much more than that."

"Thrift Shop" is fast approaching $2 million dollars in sales and its video has just surpassed 65 million hits on YouTube.

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis are scheduled to perform on 7 p.m., Sunday, March 3 in the Butler-Hancock gym.
