Celebrities’ special legal treatment unfair, unjust

It seems as if the legal system has once again managed to cut corners for yet another celebrity delinquent. Dwayne Michael Carter Jr., or better known as Grammy-award winning rapper Lil' Wayne, has recently had his jail sentencing for gun possession pushed back due to a scheduled dental surgery for a mere cracked tooth in his $150,000 "grill." Lil' Wayne will not be serving his time in prison for another three weeks because of this.

Lil' Wayne has spent months preparing for his departure to the correctional facility. Fans and press alike have been receiving farewells from the rapper and blogs have been popping up all over the Internet promoting campaign slogans such as "Free Lil' Weezy." The rapper's sentence was originally set to begin Feb. 9.

The question that comes to mind is whether or not a situation such as this would apply to ordinary citizens that commit crimes and whether or not it is fair. The honest answer to this question would probably be no. It, however, seems to occur quite often for celebrities. Just because you happen to have some sort of toothache or another circumstance of the same measure, shouldn't exempt you from serving time in a correctional facility if you've broken a law.
Such an occurrence took place when the heiress to the Hilton fortune, Paris Hilton, was supposed to serve 45 days in jail for violating probation. Hilton's sentencing was delayed, and she was released from the facility before she even completed her time. What was the reasoning for Hilton's early release?  Supposed medical issues and problems with the jail's food. It is situations like these that make one question whether or not our legal system is one that actually condones "justice for all."

The point is, if you break a law, you break a law. If you are sentenced to time in prison, then serve your time. There's no reason to beat around the bush just because one who committed a crime has a high status and a loaded bank account. An average Joe wouldn't be granted an extension due to a minor medical problem. What is the point of having laws for all citizens to follow if celebrities get off with a slap on the wrist if a law is broken? That defeats the purpose of even having a legal system.
