It's harder each day to pretend that next year, universities across the nation will have to make difficult sacrifices. Cuts will be made in a variety of areas to make sure the bulk of the institution can continue to prosper. But it will be frustrating for many.
Those who will lose their jobs, chance for tenure, tuition scholarships and other facets of their college lives will unfortunately be affected by these huge budget cuts.
In these times, it's important to have a sense of understanding and empathy for those who are hit the hardest. Although the university will continue to survive, its campus community needs to remember that these are not times to just sit back and think things can't get better — it is an opportunity to reorganize priorities and strengthen the bond between all its members.
UNC has made large efforts in the last few years to understand its student body and attract new talent into its programs. Although these efforts have proved empirically successful, there is still the matter of how to keep the programs and efforts going without the funding the university used to have.
In coming together as a community, members need to become more involved with the resources they have. There are many organizations at this institution that strive to go beyond the classroom or training field to further the knowledge of their subject. But there is also a significant overcoat of apathy in some areas. This campus must shake off its coat of indifference and become much more unified as it heads toward a great challenge.
It is essential to not lose tempers or push relationships away. The only way to stave off the irritations of this time will to be to accept those around you. During these times, you don't have to love your neighbor, but you need to respect them or continue the downward spiral of miserable conditions.
Become invested in the things that will matter today. Years from now, this class will want to have a reason to invest in it and keep the inspiration and motivation in the University of Northern Colorado students alive for years to come. But it must maintain against this storm coming in the fall.
