The UNC wrestling team has been banned from participating in the NCAA tournament due to low grades.
The NCAA released a list of teams banned from participating in the NCAA tournament on Wednesday. The University of Northern Colorado was the only school to have a wrestling team banned.
The NCAA requires Division I teams to achieve and maintain a 900 Academic Progress Rate over a four-year period. Any team that fails to maintain a 900 APR is banned from participating in NCAA tournaments and sometimes conference tournaments. The wrestling team’s APR was not released.
The APR rating looked at the grades from the 2007-08 school year to 2010-11.
The ban is for one year, and the NCAA will look at the scores of all DI schools next year. If the average for the Bears from the 2008-09 school year to 2011-12 increases to meet the 900 APR rating, they will be academically eligible for the NCAA tournament in the 2013-14 season.
