Men’s Basketball

A 20-0 run was too much for the UNC men’s basketball team to recover from Saturday as it lost to the University of California-Riverside 69-63 in Riverside, Calif.

The University of Northern Colorado (1-4) was behind, 23-16 when UC-Riverside (2-6) racked up the final five points of the second half and the first 15 of the second half.

In the second half, the Bears outscored UC-Riverside 47-41 but couldn’t complete the comeback.

UNC forwards Derrick Barden and Tim Huskisson recorded double-doubles, with Barden scoring 11 points and 14 rebounds while Huskisson scored 12 points and grabbed 12 boards.

The Bears take the court again at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Northern Iowa (4-3).

Wrestling

Participating in one of the more competitive tournaments of its season, three members of the UNC wrestling team made it to the second day of the Cliff Keen Invitational in Las Vegas, with junior Justin Gonzales (149 pounds) and sophomore heavyweight Henry Chirino both placing.

Heading into the tournament, Gonzales was undefeated but suffered his first pair of losses of the season in Nevada.
Gonzales took seventh place by a medical forfeit.

Chirino went 4-3 during the invitational, finishing in eighth after being on the losing end of an 8-5 decision against Cal Baptist’s sophomore Zach Merrill.

UNC sophomore Charlie McMartin (165 pounds) was the final Bear to compete on the second day of the tournament, going 3-2 with a fall and two decisions.

The Bears have one final tournament in 2012, as they partake in the Reno Tournament Dec. 16.
