UNC sophomore heavyweight Henry Chirino grapples with Nebraska freshman Donny Longendyke during Saturday's duel at Greeley Central High School.
The UNC wrestling team fell 28-9 to Nebraska in its first dual of the season Saturday at Greeley Central High School.
Winning individual bouts for the University of Northern Colorado were freshman Nick Adams at 141 pounds, junior Justin Gonzales at 149 pounds and sophomore Henry Chirino at 285 pounds.
Adams gave the Bears their first three points, gaining the decision against Nebraska senior Ridge Kiley by an 8-3 score. Adams was able to achieve a total of two minutes and 11 seconds of riding time against Kiley.
Gonzales began his bout against freshman Nick Babcock with a scoreless first period before Gonzales scored his first point on an escape. Ahead 1-0 at the start of the third period, Babcock tied the score with an escape of his own. With four seconds remaining, Gonzales was awarded a takedown for two points earning a 3-1 victory.
With the two teams sitting at 28-6 before the heavyweight competition began, Chirino stepped onto the mat to face freshman Donny Longendyke. Chirino and Longendyke stayed in a stalemate until Longendyke had an escape toward the end of the second round. Down a point going into the third period, Chirino chose a neutral position, which set him up for a takedown, giving him a 2-1 advantage.
A Longendyke escape tied the score once again at 2-2, but Chirino’s 2:01 riding time crowned him winner of the heavyweights.
Sophomore 125-pounder Jesse Meis came close to a victory, but fell 1-0 when he allowed Nebraska’s freshman Eric Coufal to escape.
The Bears host the Old Chicago Open all day Saturday at Butler-Hancock Sports Pavilion.
