The UNC soccer team heads to the cornfields of the Midwest this weekend looking to rebound from a Sept. 6 loss to Wyoming.
The University of Northern Colorado (2-3-1) will take on Drake University (6-2) in Des Moines, Iowa, Friday then travel to Lincoln, Neb., to face the Cornhuskers of the University of Nebraska.
One player UNC will have to guard closely is Bulldogs sophomore forward Ashlie Stokes. Stokes has four goals on the season, accompanied by one assist. She and junior goalkeeper Kalena Litch — who boasts a 0.87 goals-against average — have been named Missouri Valley Conference Offensive Player of the Week and Goalkeeper of the Week, respectively.
In the Nebraska (3-4) match, UNC will look to attack a Huskers defense that has given up almost a goal and a half per contest this season. The Nebraska offense, however, has scored more than 1.5 goals per game. Sophomore forward Mayme Conroy leads the Husker attack with three goals on the young season.
The Bears and Bulldogs played to a 2-2 tie Sept. 18 last year in Greeley. On Aug. 19 of this season, Drake traveled to Lincoln and handed the Huskers a loss in their home opener.
Kickoff Friday against Drake is scheduled for 6 p.m., and Sunday’s contest against Nebraska will begin at noon.
