The University of Northern Colorado women’s soccer team lost a heartbreaker to TCU 2-1 on a 88th minute goal at Jackson field Sunday afternoon.
The Bears came in looking to keep their undefeated record on the season after a three-game sweep in the Colorado Cup last week.
UNC got on the board first when Maddie Roberts scored a point-blank off an assist from Kaityln Meeder.
“Kaitlyn dribbled the ball up the line and I saw her coming in,” Roberts said “We had a few runners there. I was a little late. I just timed my run and Kaitlyn gave me a great pass and I was able to finish it.”
And despite being outshot 8-5 in the half, Northern Colorado took that 1-0 advantage into halftime.
“I thought it was a great first half,” coach Tim Barrera. “We absorbed a lot of their pressure. We competed well. When we got the ball out wide, we had some success.”
The start of the second half looked a lot like the first, with both team getting chances, but neither capitalizing.
That was until the 63rd minute, when Emma Heckendorn connected with a cross that had pinballed around in the box to tie the game at one.
Then, in the 88th minute, it was Heckendorn again, dropping the dagger that gave TCU the lead with just over a minute left, and ultimately the win.
“It was disappointing because we had some chances,” said Barrera. “In games like that, you’re not going to get a ton of chances.
The Bears are back in action Friday when they host New Hampshire.
