The Northern Colorado women’s basketball team upset No. 20 DePaul 94-88 at McGrath-Phillips in Chicago to open its season Friday night.
Savannah Scott had 35 points on a perfect 13-13 from the free throw line to lead the Bears to their first win over a top-25 team since moving to Division I in 2006.
DePaul lead by two at halftime, but UNC went on an 11-0 run on its way to outscoring the Blue Devils 28-14 in the quarter.
From that point out, the closest DePaul would get was three, and a number clutch free throws down the stretch for the Bears held the Blue Devils at bay.
UNC’s final 12 points came at the charity stripe and finished 33-37 (89 percent) from the line on the night.
Courtney Smith added 24 points and seven rebounds, stunting multiple DePaul runs with timely baskets down the stretch.
The Bears play The University of Denver in Denver tomorrow before opening their home slate at 7 p.m. Wednesday when they play host to LSU.
