The University of Northern Colorado’s Intramural Sports Season A, along with the annual Homecoming basketball tournament registration closes on Sept. 13.
Fall Season A of sports will provide the students with a plethora of sports to get involved with, including different free-to-play tournaments that anyone can join.
The leagues being provided include 7v7 flag football, volleyball and wiffle ball. For both football and volleyball, there will be a co-rec option to go along with the men's and women's teams.
“Whether you consider yourself good or not at your sport, it doesn't matter! Just get your friends and come sign up for whatever you are passionate about. Intramurals are a great way to get to know people too, and to have some fun outside of school,” Intramural Referee Kayla Shilz said.
The first free-to-play tournament to be hosted this year was pickleball, taking place on Sept. 4. Pickleball has taken the sporting scene by storm this past year and was represented by intramural sports for the first time at UNC. This was followed by a cornhole tournament on Sept. 9 as well as a 3v3 basketball tournament on Sept. 11. Intramural sports looks forward to hosting more tournaments in the future, as students on campus are ready for some competition.
“I will definitely be playing in the basketball tournament at least. I played last year and it was a lot of fun to be a part of a team again," said Peyton Mccewan, a UNC senior. "We’re coming back for our championship in the regular league too.”
UNC will also be hosting its annual staff vs. students 3v3 basketball tournament. The event will take place Wednesday, Sept. 25 at the Campus Rec. Teams are limited to four players maximum, with the winning team taking home t-shirts. Registration ends on Monday, Sept. 23.
In order to participate in this year's leagues or special events, competitors will need to purchase the intramural pass. This can be purchased as a semester pass for $20 or as an annual pass for $30. Passes can be purchased on the Campus Rec web portal or through the UNCO Rec App on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.
While registration has been open since Aug. 23, the final due date for all registrations was pushed back, due to teams sign ups just recently beginning to fill up.
“The kids need to make sure to sign up properly because every year we get kids trying to play on teams that they didn't register for. We want as many kids to sign up as possible and to get it back to how things used to be,” Shilz said.
Students planning to compete in leagues or tournaments are expected to know the rules prior to playing their first game and to also adhere to them. Any issues between team members and rec staff are handled between the teams captain and the head of Intramural sports, Malik Osborn.

The Intramural sports supervisors and officials will also be providing club sports shirts and hats for the winning team in each season. As registration closes and the season begins, the club sports office urges all the students to get involved in their favorite sports on campus.
